HoloLens 2 – a milestone in the XR-World

| Field of view doubles
| Control extended and simplified
| Comfort increased

Through the presentation of the HoloLens 2, the cross-platform strategy and the forced partnering in the field of X-Reality, underscores Microsoft, that in the future the way we retrieve information and interact with it will be a completely different way – with the groundbreaking Hololens 2 and the Open-Ecosystem strategy, Microsoft sets a significant milestone for this development.

We believe that an ecosystem can only thrive, if it has no barriers for innovation or customers.

On Sunday, 24.02.2019 the time had finally come, the next generation of mixed reality headsets, the Microsoft HoloLens 2, was officially launched and it goes beyond all expectations.

During the development of HoloLens 2, Microsoft strongly oriented itself on the feedback from the partners and users of HoloLens 1 and took three aspects into consider:

  • Immersion
  • Comfort
  • Ready for Business

Immersion, the feeling of perceiving a (virtual) environment as real, strongly depends on the visual information that the user receives. With the HoloLens 2, Microsoft has more than doubled the field of view of its predecessor, while maintaining the same 47 pixels per degree of view. According to Microsoft, this means switching from a 720p to a 2K TV for each eye.

Comfort

Microsoft has also thought about comfort and ergonomics. After comparison with more than 1000 people of different age groups, genders and ethnic origin, the HoloLens 2 has a universal fit system that adapts to a wide range of users making it easy to fit like a hat. The weight of the HoloLens 2 has been reduced by constructing the entire outer cover entirely of carbon fiber. In addition, the weight is evenly distributed between the front and back so that the user feels more comfortable to wear than with the previous model.

Applications

With HoloLens 2, Microsoft offers Out-of-the-box solutions such as Remote Assist, layouts and guides and with the help of Mixed Reality Partners a much broader range of ready-made solutions for different industries and applications. With the HoloLens Customization Program, Microsoft also offers the possibility to customize the HoloLens according to special needs.

Improvements of the HoloLens 2 to the previous model at a glance

Eye Tracking
Sensors track the movement of the eyes, so there is no need for head movements. The object being viewed gets highlighted.

Iris Detection
The HoloLens carrier is detected beyond doubt by scanning the iris.

Field of view
The field of view has more than doubled.

Gesture control
The interaction with holograms is much more natural. Touching objects is perceived (by a glow) and the gestures look much more real.

Comfort
Optimum weight balance, less load on the nose.

HoloLens 2 and Azure

The connection of HoloLens 2 with Azure opens up completely new possibilities, as many AI-Calculations can be transferred to the cloud.

Spatial Anchor

With the „Spatial Anchor”, Microsoft creates a platform-independent service, a so-called „Internet of holograms “, in which 3D contents are stored in the real world and simultaneously visible via various end devices (ARkit, ARcore, HoloLens). These interact with each other and can also be operated across devices.

Remote Rendering

Remote rendering solves the problem of resolution, since the HoloLens can only store and render a limited number of polygons. By using Azure high resolution 3D models can be streamed to the HoloLens.
